Object History

This director’s chair belonged to a woman who, aged 90, became unable to look after herself and had to move into care. In earlier times, she had been a teacher. The chair had perhaps once been her husband’s. He was a Birmingham City Architect and had died many years previously. We acquired it when we bought the house, which was completely full of stuff. The chair was one of the few items worth saving from the skip. The seat was in very bad condition, so we had it restored. It has a slightly unusual design, perhaps 1930s. There is a small stamped medallion on the back saying simply ‘European’. Is that a brand or just a statement of origin? Now we no longer need it, so it is looking for a new home.

In good condition.
