Object History

Design features:

This 1920s wooden armchair, as far as we can tell, may well be by Richard Riemerschmid, given that some of his designs are the nearest that we can find online. In any case, we know that it would have been bought before 1930, so, in terms of design history, it sits at the very beginning of the German shift from ornate to modern... somewhere between Art Deco and Bauhaus.

Personal details:

My German grandfather, a family doctor, bought (possibly commissioned) and used it as part of an office suite in his German consulting room, and then again in England, having fled Germany in 1933. It is one of a few pieces of furniture rescued by my grandmother in 1934, when she returned to Germany, at great personal risk, to retrieve as much as was possible at the time.

In good condition.
